6 Tips to Prepare for an Outdoor Project

If you find yourself wishing you had an outdoor space to enjoy but don’t know where to begin, here are six tips to prepare for an outdoor project to help move you in the right direction.

1.)  Think about how you want to use your space. Do you want a huge lawn for young children to run freely, or do you want a concrete patio with furniture to entertain friends?  Do you want to create a natural habitat for wildlife, or perhaps a quiet space with privacy screens all around? Knowing the answers to these questions will ensure that the final product will match your needs and lifestyle.

2.) Consider the amount of resources that will be required to maintain the landscape you have in mind. Lawns are great if you have kids or animals, but they require water throughout the summer months, regular mowing and edging, and fertilizer to keep them healthy year-round. Flowering shrubs are beautiful and feed pollinators, but many require pruning at specific times of the year. Do you plan to maintain your landscape on your own or will you need to hire a company to help keep it looking tidy? Low maintenance landscapes require planning, especially when it comes to selecting plant material.

3.) Peruse landscape magazines for outdoor project ideas. Clip out pages of outdoor spaces, plants combinations, hardscapes, and other landscape features that you like. There’s no better way to learn your preferences, and a little bit of research will go a long way. Other great resources include Houzz.com and LandscapingNetwork.com, and of course, Pinterest.

4.) Pack up the family and drive around to look at mature landscapes and take note of what plants work in our area. If you know that fall color is important to you, October is a great time to visit local nurseries to see what plants offer the most visual impact.

5.) Research specific features that you’d like in your landscape, along with costs. Instead of going with a custom concrete fire pit, financial sense might dictate that you choose a precast concrete fire pit instead. Plan with a budget in mind. Knowing your budget is a great first step to any successful project.
