Winterize Your Irrigation

It’s only October, but the blistering chill in the air makes it feel like December!  Before frost hits, we recommend blowing out your irrigation system to prevent damage to your PVC piping.  Because water expands when it freezes, pipes must somehow accommodate this expansion.  Typically what results are cracks, leaking, and the need for repair.

Our competitive prices are determined by the number of zones in your system and start from $69.00.

If you’re a current maintenance customer, we’ll take 10% off your final invoice.

Exposed Aggregate Concrete Driveway

We recently constructed an exposed aggregate driveway for a client who lives in the Dockside community on Kitsap Lake.  We tackled the exposed aggregate portion of this project in two separate pours.  This allowed us the time to finish the decorative aggregate surface and match up the cut lines in a controlled fashion.

The mud has been delivered, and is being distributed throughout the area of the soon-to-be driveway.

Cut lines are carefully placed to mitigate cracks from occurring.

The top part of the driveway has already been exposed. In the bottom half of the driveway, the decorative aggregate is embedded in the concrete, though awaits its exposure through brushing and washing the surface.

After revealing the decorative aggregate, any residual surface mortar is washed away.

Shade Garden Plant Companions

Every gardener loves it when two plants are planted next to one another without a lot of fuss, then lo and behold, what results is a pairing made in plant heaven.  That’s how we felt when we visited a landscape that we installed a year ago, and saw how well Saxifraga ‘London Pride’ (aureopunctata) complemented Japanese painted fern (athyrium niponicum pictum).

Wouldn’t you agree?

Japanese painted fern’s wispy, silvery elegance is subtle, yet eye-catching.

The striking markings on both plants along with their complementary shapes are what make this pairing so visually appealing.

Saxifraga ‘London Pride’ produces a mass of small pale pink rosette flowers that grow from stems in the spring.

Landscape Installation & Maintenance

With landscaping projects that we install, it’s often the case that our clients will hire us to maintain their new yard.  We love when this happens, as we get to nurture what we created and watch it grow.  The only people better equipped than us to take care of it are the homeowners themselves, though often they’re just too busy to do so.  It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved that we offer both installation and maintenance services.

This hydroseed was applied in September of 2010.  We also installed the irrigation system you see fired off.

Colby and I QC’d this site a few weeks ago when the sun was still out.  Here’s what the now two-year-old grass looked like after consistent watering throughout the hottest months of the year, a round of fertilizer, and a fresh mow.

We were pleased with Phil’s mowing lines.  As one fan commented on our Facebook page: “Play ball!”

What is Exposed Aggregate?

Unless you’ve been researching concrete finishes or have experience in construction, you may not know what exposed aggregate is.  Chances are, however, that you’ve seen it. Exposed aggregate is the finish of choice for sidewalks, pathways, and driveways for many commercial spaces.   Because of its decorative appeal, it’s also commonly used for patios and plazas.

According to ConcreteNetwork.com, an exposed-aggregate surface is obtained by placing concrete and then removing the outer ‘skin’ of cement paste to uncover decorative coarse aggregate (either batched into the concrete mix or seeded onto the surface).  Essentially, this finish reveals and exposes the natural stones embedded near the surface of the concrete, which would otherwise be hidden by a thin layer of surface mortar.

Exposed aggregate is less expensive than stamped concrete as it requires less tools, and more decorative than a basic brushed finish.  It’s durable, skid resistant, and requires little maintenance.  It is also extremely versatile, as it contrasts nicely against brushed finish and stamped and colored concrete.
