Unless you’ve been researching concrete finishes or have experience in construction, you may not know what exposed aggregate is. Chances are, however, that you’ve seen it. Exposed aggregate is the finish of choice for sidewalks, pathways, and driveways for many commercial spaces. Because of its decorative appeal, it’s also commonly used for patios and plazas.

According to ConcreteNetwork.com, an exposed-aggregate surface is obtained by placing concrete and then removing the outer ‘skin’ of cement paste to uncover decorative coarse aggregate (either batched into the concrete mix or seeded onto the surface). Essentially, this finish reveals and exposes the natural stones embedded near the surface of the concrete, which would otherwise be hidden by a thin layer of surface mortar.

Exposed aggregate is less expensive than stamped concrete as it requires less tools, and more decorative than a basic brushed finish. It’s durable, skid resistant, and requires little maintenance. It is also extremely versatile, as it contrasts nicely against brushed finish and stamped and colored concrete.
