2013 NW Flower & Garden Show

Colby and I are starting to get excited for the upcoming Northwest Flower & Garden Show, which takes place at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle in February.  From the 20th – 24th, attendees will be inspired by – amongst other show offerings – six acres of spectacular Show Gardens created by highly esteemed local designers and landscapers such as Heidi Skievaski of Sublime Garden Design and Riz Reyes of RHR Horticulture.

Folks travel from all over the country to attend this show, and with all the free horticulture Seminars on offer, it’s no wonder why.  Colby’s looking forward to Phil Wood’s seminar entitled ‘East Meets West: Asian Design for Northwest Gardens.’  I’m a little saddened by the fact that I won’t be able to sit in on Ciscoe Morris’ Friday seminar that teaches how to ‘Turn Your Garden into a Wildlife Sanctuary,’ though I certainly will be there for Reyes’ ‘Superstars of the Garden‘ seminar during which he’ll talk about big, bold, and bodacious plants.  Yes, bodacious!

We’re making a weekend out of it, knowing that we’ll come out of the experience with new knowledge to put to use this growing season.  If all of this sounds too good to miss, you can purchase tickets here.  Hope to see you there!

Back Yard Retreat

Before we started this project in August 2012, this back yard was filled with native trees and the earth was dramatically sloped.  We brought in fill dirt and constructed two retaining walls in order to create and support a level patio area for our clients to gather outdoors. Hydroseed was applied and a stamped concrete patio was installed.

Here, the retaining walls had already been constructed.  Colby sprays the lines for a concrete patio.

Forms for the patio are ready for concrete, and the soil has been graded to prepare for hydroseed.

The concrete patio has been installed and stamped, while the hydroseed has sprouted baby grass.

Post-color is applied to the interior and border, along with varying colors to make the compass stamp really pop.

This back yard retreat is bordered by native trees; a great place to unwind.

Would you like your own back yard retreat?  Check out another blog post here for more inspiration.  And just in case you were wondering, our clients love their new back yard.

How To Plant

Best practices often bring us back to basics.  In this video, Colby guides viewers through the process of planting a small to medium-sized plant. This landscaping project in Bremerton included the installation of an exposed aggregate walkway with steps, new topsoil, plants and bark.
