Landscape for a New Home

With a 5 year-old son and another baby on the way, our clients in Poulsbo sought a new lawn for the kids to play on, and wanted a landscape they could enjoy for years to come. The existing landscape of their recently constructed home left much to be desired, as you can tell from the photo below.

Before

We directed water away from their site via the dry creek bed (not pictured is the slope that faces the back side of their house), planted mostly drought tolerant plants, and extended their exposed aggregate patio by nearly 500 square feet.  Premium topsoil was delivered and spread to prepare for hydroseed.

After

The dry creek bed connects to their neighbor’s landscape, which we also installed at the same time.  To ensure that the young children could access one another’s back yards without damaging the new landscapes, we placed a few “bridges” (flat rocks the length of the dry creek bed) throughout.

Impatiens omeiana

Commonly known as hardy impatiens, I refer to it as the one that got away.  If you keep up with our blog, then you know we passed on it at the Bloedel Reserve’s annual plant sale earlier this year.  Seeing it in the landscape surrounding the water feature at Savage Plants nursery, mature and thriving in its conditions, made me realize how much I love this plant.

Impatiens omeiana is native to China and grows in moist, well-drained soils in part shade to full shade in zones 6 to 9.

Give it room to grow as it’s a spreading perennial.  Not only does it offer striking, colorful foliage, but its flowers are showstoppers.  Take a look for yourself…

Early fall is when this plant will bloom.  Lucky for us, Far Reaches Farm in Port Townsend has this plant in stock.  We’ll happily make the trip as our woodland garden feels incomplete without it!

Garden Art

We often come across garden art that’s too cute, too country, or just plain tacky.  But we were tickled pink when we spotted these at Savage Plants in Kingston.  These non-edible ‘shrooms made of copper are fun and whimsical, and will surely be a welcome surprise to visitors of your garden.
